Taylor’s CD Pick - The Beach Boys Pet Sounds

First released on May 16, 1966, and later re-mastered for re-release in 1996/1997, this CD is now part of a boxed set The Pet Sound Sessions.  A re-mixed, re-mastered CD (finally giving stereo quality) was released in 2007 to celebrate 40 years of music by The Beach Boys.

Brian Wilson cited the Beatles Rubber Soul as the inspiration for this album, and the Beatles later answered with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The album is thought to be the turning point in defining the band’s creative differences.

Amazon’s in house review adds:   “If you need some pointy-headed pundit to sell you on the merits of Pet Sounds, your money might be better spent on an ear specialist. Brian Wilson’s gift to 20th-century music elevated this pop album into a beguiling musical and emotional cogency that still operates outside pop culture’s fickle space-time continuum–and limited critical lexicon.”

Track Listing:
1.  Wouldn’t it Be Nice.
2.  You Still Believe in Me.
3.  That’s Not Me.
4.  Don’t Talk.
5.  I’m Waiting for the Day.
6.  Let’s Go Away for Awhile.
7.  Sloop John B.
8.  God Only Knows.
9.  I Know There’s An Answer.
10.  Here Today.
11.  I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.
12.  PET SOUNDS.
13.  Caroline No.
14.  Hang On to Your Ego.

Would like to add -- track 14 on that listing is a BONUS TRACK unique to the late '90s re-release, the same song as #9 I Know There's An Answer, but with the original words (which it was decided was too drug-oriented to put out at the time).

Also, everyone should listen to the mono version before the stereo version (which on the re-releases is on the same disc, right after the original mono version). Brian Wilson cannot hear in stereo, he is deaf in his right ear, so to hear stereo is to not hear the man's vision for this album. IMO, stereo sound adds nothing to these tracks.
This is one of the great CDs of all time. "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" usually make top 20 singles of all time lists, "Sloop John B" is glorious fun.

And Mari, do I recall correctly that "Good Vibrations" was recorded at the same time??

Pet Sounds is a bit different from what Taylor usually says he listens to.. would like to hear more about who urged him to listen to it, and what he thinks about it.
When this CD suggestion came out, Stacey and I had a long discussion about why he chose it. Being the Beach Boys expert that she is, and knowing that this is one of the most influential records of all time, she is still awaiting her answer!
Margaux, GV was indeed recorded around the same time, but slated for the (never to arrive) Smile album. (Actually, Brian released Smile a few years ago, although it is probably nothing like what it would have been had it been completed in 1967.)

God Only Knows was actually named Greatest Love Song of All Time several years ago in a poll somewhere. I'm pretty fond of it.

One of my theories about Taylor listening to this album: Brian Wilson's one and only appearance at American Idol was the night Taylor won. Connection? Perhaps! I can't wait to find out. Neither Brian nor Taylor has seen fit to tell me yet, tho! Sad
Mari -- we should keep working on getting Taylor to call us at the party so we can ask him these burning musical questions. I'd love to get a list of musicians, albums, and just ask him to respond... And Pet Sounds would be a great place to start.
Oh yes, we need him to call, and then we need someone brave enough to ask the questions! Haha Not me!

I'm feeling compelled to go visit Brian's message board now...
Bumping this up to inform you there is another new CD pick at HQ for those who are members there to see Smile
