In looking through the comments for a time frame - '78 or '79 - I found this simple but superb descripton of TW

Great poets usually aren't brilliant comedians, but Tom Waits is both. Like Chaplin he tells us sad stories that make us laugh and see a glimpse of truth. That's very very rare.
That was great, TW is a true artist. But why were people laughing? I just don't get that. It reminded me of our Jimbo experience.People can screw up a wonderful moment.
Alicia
Alicia,
I remembered our road trip conversation and posted that one because I thought you would want to see it.
TW does seem to toss in a line or two for a little contrasting levity from time to time - have caught a few in some of his other pieces too but - like you - I am usually so caught up in the overall mood he has created that the audience surprises me.
I did chuckle along with them on this line
Charlie, I still think about ya man everytime I pass a filing station, all on account of all the grease you used to wear in your hair.
Hey Tricia, it may take the prize for most unusual - but I think it's funny ! !
And it reminded me of a favorite movie of mine - - yes really

Think Tim Burton 'tis brilliant ! !
Posting two because they sort of go together

SIDENOTE: If anyone else is a fan he has a new movie being released to theatres Dec. 21st
Burton & Depp - together again - and one of the darkest of the dark - the musical has an element of black comedy but the movie may be playing it more straight up
Recommend an after Christmas viewing
