NEW NOTE:
When I first started this thread it was in hopes of getting people to explore on their own.  But realize not everyone likes the hunt the way I do, so am bringing bits here instead in hopes people will listen.

This quiet period right now is a perfect time to explore the work of another gifted musician whose musical roots are similar to Taylor's.  If Grace Potter's cover of Otis Redding's Pain In My Heart below doesn't convince you she has those roots - then how about a contemporary connection - -  not only did she open for Gov't Mule in a recent tour -  but Warren Haynes brought her out to perform with them regularly.  Curious yet ?

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals will be my focus and I will be adding new things for you to check out.

But please feel free to bring related music/artists in as well.

Would love to have your honest comments but if don't care to do that then please listen anyway.   I don't think you'll be sorry.

BTW:  don't ever be reluctant to comment on music or an artist - - do remember that it is okay to disagree about a song or an artist - - and remember to keep it about the post - not the poster  Smile

(now where have you heard that before ?)

ORIGINAL POST:

Wish I could embed this one for you but Please take the time to go listen - - And now I can embed it for you Smile
This is from their Workplay concert - it's a cover of an Otis Redding song - - but I hear the ghost of someone else in her rendition
Anyone else hearing what I am ? ?

Now for anyone who likes a hunt - - or who has a music warehouse in their head - -

> Grace is mistaken in her opening remark - it only appeared to be written by a woman
Answer: Naomi Neville is listed as the songwriter but that is a name Allen Toussaint wrote under.

>  The song was originally released under another name
Answer: Ruler of My Heart

>  That version was done by a woman
Answer: Irma Thomas

This isn't buried info btw - just a nice romp.

Grin I'll pass on this one just because I know.Grin
I found the answer...
no youtube clip for it.
Figured it wouldn't take you long  Grin

I haven't had any luck with a video either - am reluctant to click on some of the less traveled sites

Can have a listen on her myspace though - - and of course Rhapsody - - two different takes - maybe at different ages ? - - like them both

# 3 in the Most Popular list on Rhapsody is a medley including Pockey Way - nice Smile

More hints in case anyone else wants to play - - from the Rhapsody profile

Quote:
XXXX may be one of the most ripped-off artists of all time, thanks to the Stones' heartless swiping of her signature song, "Time Is on My Side." The rancor sits to this day in a woman hailed as the Soul Queen of New Orleans. In the early '60s, XXXX and local genius Allen Toussaint produced a catalog of timeless ballads and Soul hits that boasted the double whammy of Toussaint's expert songcraft and XXXX's singing. Her voice could express such ache and emotion that listening was as painful as it was cathartic. Her songs roll along at the leisurely pace of life in a hot, boozy city, with Toussaint's flourishing piano supporting XXXX's radiant delivery and R&B-flavored backing vocals. XXXX continues to record, trying her hand at Gospel, Soul and more. This is romantic, yearning music with the pulse of New Orleans running through it.

???

I won't be able to watch these without it taking 100 years...
Amy,
this is the one that sets the tone of where Grace seems to be going with her music - -  I just tend to want to drag all the carrots out of the rabbit hole Wink

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Pain In My Heart

Most of us enjoy Taylor's versatility as a musician and for some of us it is even an important reason we are still around .  The desire to attend multiple concerts comes from never knowing what will happen - - a tag of Pink Floyd's The Wall - - the guts to do an obviously impromtu, stripped down, rendition of Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne - - a heart stopping combination of  Hold on to Your Love with Can’t Trust Your Neighbor & Lonely Avenue - - the list goes on - - - -

Am finding that Grace Potter also has that ability to surprise and impress by bringing her own interpretation to the songs she covers - - and to surprise with variations to her songs in live performance.  I like her albums - especially This Is Somewhere but the live performances are just - - - more ! - -

Sound familiar ?

She is another versatile gifted musician rapidly joining the top of my short list of favorites

The first comment in this thread linked to a beautiful blues performance - -  this is the rocking side of GPTN

Red Rocks - the song title is actually Delta

I take it you wouldn't be opposed to a Grace and Taylor duet? Haha
Hey we all have our fantasy concerts.  Toss in Marc Broussard or even Charlie A'Court with side orders of Keb'Mo' & Josh on guitar and Brian on sax and order my tombstone Smile

*sigh* - - maybe I'll go pull that Publishers Clearing House entry out of the recycling ..................
