I thought this would be fun to see how we talk different based on region.
We had new neighbors awhile back who were from Chicago. The mom would always say "pop"-took me a few times to realize she was talking about soda!
Another one is- we here in NE say "lollipop" and someone else might say "sucker":P
Can you think of others....
I'm a soda & lollipop kind of gal
I'm not sure when things changed from pop to soda. I can remember as a kid my grandparents calling it pop and we've lived in this area forever. Perhaps a generational thing?
One thing I can remember having to explain to someone...the front lawn is the dooryard. Anyone use that term? Such as "The dog is out in the dooryard."
Never heard of dooryard?!
I remember when I moved to MA and was working at a fast food
Friendly's in Boston everyone asked for "tonic". I gave people tonic
water for weeks until I figured out tonic meant soda (and they still
didn't specify which type they wanted) Very confusing
How about sub vs. grinder vs. hoagie?
Actually it's more like doahyahd with the accent...
It's a sub for me.
Grinder is localized to CT and RI, and you still have to have been born here. It's genetic.
What do you put your groceries in? Bag or sack? For that matter, what's the thing you roll around the store, a cart, carriage, or something else?
I once took a quiz that tells you what dialect of American English you speak, based on what words you use. I'll have to find it again, it was cool. I was like 80% New England skewed CT, and like 15% Southern and 5% midwest.
ETA: That was easy to find!

Up hear in Maine some say Partridge or Patridge this is a hunted very tasty bird that we shoot here or try to hit with our pick-up trucks.
Is it Hotdog or Hutdog..............Cookout or Barbaque
Gas or Gazzzzzzzz ....................this comes from being right next door to oh
Canada
Great idea Taybea I didn't have much to think about this afternoon.

I'm usually pretty quiet but had to get into this one--
As far as "soda" or "pop" go, I a bit of a melting pot I guess cuz I call it
"soda pop".
What do you put on your ice cream? Shots, Sprinkles or Jimmies?
If your going to a BYOB party, do you stop at the Liquor store or Package store?
I would stop at a package store and on my twist soft serve cone I always get chocolate shots. Can you guess where I'm from?
That was fun! I actually got 10% Dixie and 10% upper midwestern, not sure how that happended. The rest well 25% yankee I can see.
45% General American English
30% Yankee
10% Dixie
10% Upper Midwestern
LOL where does the upper midwestern come from???
When I lived in CT it was sprinkles and package store. Now that
I've been in MA for so long it's turned into jimmies and liquor store

Shots!?? Never heard that one before.
For me it's always been "grinder", don't someplaces also refer to them as heros as well as sub, hoagie...?
We had a discussion in my house the other day on how you say "coupon". Just like it's spelled or so that it sounds like "Qupon"
Does anyone ever say catsup? I've always said ketchup...
