The contestants have been narrowed to 12, so I think it's time for a new thread.
Tonight is Beatles night. What I've heard so far is that the list is 25 songs, all from the early years (through REVOLVER). Which means Sgt. Pepper, the White Album and Abbey Road are out.

Here's a distressing quote from Nigel:

Quote:
Q: Why were there themes for the semifinals this year? In past seasons it was completely open-ended.
NIGEL LYTHGOE: Because I think last year we started on a strange footing, where people were choosing songs that they like, and you can't just choose songs that you like. You have to choose songs that you think the public are going to like. I think they're too naïve at that early stage of the competition to realize that. So we said no, we've got to choose songs with melodies, songs that you can perform, or songs that the public might know.

The interview, which also includes AI vocal coach Debra Byrd, is worth reading if you have a strong stomach...

What better way to judge a musician than by knowing what songs they like??!? Argh I wish they'd stop assuming that we're as musically ignorant as Simon Cowell.

What songs do you want to hear tonight?
PLEASE NO SONG SPOILERS, I love suprises....

With the exception of Season 5, I've thought it's great that they couldn't access the Beatles songbook. Who wants to hear great songs destroyed? Roll Eyes

So I guess the "songs I want to hear tonight" list would be my least favorite Beatles songs. But I know that won't happen, either. crying

It's a good thing I'm not watching this year or I'd have to go into mourning...
From the interview....A lot of the contestants do not know the Beatles' songs?? How sad is that?
So, who is going to sing I Wanna Hold Your Hand?

According to an exit interview I read, Luke wanted to.
I'm sure it would have sounded like the WHAM version (not that there is one in real life).
Which would have been quite wrong.

Totally off-topic (well, not totally...)

Luke should have done Come On Eileen last week. IMO - if it was cleared for availability.

Just a passing thought I had when I heard it on the radio earlier today.

That is very sad given the fact that kids my daughters age are totally into the Beatles, especially after Across the Universe.

I guess it's a bad assumption that someone who wants to be a professional singer would have a broad musical knowledge, like someone we know and love. Grin

Well, you can like the Beatles and know only the popularized songs. Perhaps they have picked songs that your average music-lover (like myself) doesn't know. I had never heard Don't Let Me Down until Taylor performed it - and then I had to ask my brother-in-law (my personal Beatles' encylopedia) about it and he played the song for me from his CD collection.
To me this season has been a whole lot of weird song choices. To
listen to many of their choices, you would have had no idea what 70s or 80s music was like Roll Eyes They picked oddball ones IMO.
Season 5 many dressed the part and picked classics from the era
which made it fun w00t Although, to be fair, if you had asked me
at 16 to pick out a great song choice from the 30s or 40s I would've
been stumped too Haha

Very true, but these kids all have Parents and/or Music Teachers who were listening to music in the 70s and 80s. It does scare me how young some of the parents look!

And they have access to ITunes, don't they?

I believe I remember correctly that Sean and the "home team" were consulted on song choice when it was Taylor's turn.
