The thing about American Idol is that you don't vote against contestants, you vote for them.
Certain singers have fan bases, I've heard that Jason C and David A have strong fan bases on the scary boards, for instance. I assume that Rameile gets strong support from Filipinos, and Chikeze from Nigerians.

Certain singers get votes just because they are attractive, and Kristy Lee is getting the horny young and middle-aged votes. (See Haley Scarnato last year).

While most people thought David H was a good singer, it didn't seem to me as though he had developed a large fervent fan base. A shame because I agree with Amy and LuvTayNH, although he doesn't merit winning the whole contest, he's a dynamic performer that would have been fun to watch on the tour.
Beatles again next week?

This whole "he threw the night on purpose" story does not sit well with me. I hope it isn't true....that sucks.

I wasn't shocked that Kristy was not sent home last night....this happens every season. Remember Sanjaya staying too long? Remember Jennifer Hudson leaving too early?

I really think David Cook will make the top 3. I actually don't care who wins this season. I agree that Jason and David A. have HUGE female fan bases.
Kristy should have gone, but as Margaux pointed out, the fan base
has a huge effect. I think David H. just didn't establish much of a
connection with people, and coupled with the scandal it did him in.

I can see David C. and Brook being in the Top group, definitely. Hoping Jason is up there as well Grin
I tell ya some people have wayyyy to much time on their hands to analyze every little thing on this show. The fact is it's who is the most popular and has the bigger fan base. It's definately not all about the singing as the show would like it to be, if that was the case ALOT more people should have left before others were booted.....say Mandisa...gone way to early, Chicken Little? Common...Hey lets keep Sanjaya another week! LOL

I think the writers are bored and have to pick apart every little aspect of the show to find something to write about. They need to take a nap! Grin
I have to say this...I dont get the deal with Archuletta. Why do the young chickies go nutso for him? Im lost. He's a bit obscure--besides, Ive said this before here too, coming from such a musical family how could he not be familiar with that Beatles song he bombed on?

I just dont get it. Perhaps Im just getting old?! I could at least be amused by Sanjaya, but, come on...Argh

I'll duck for cover now--Im not sure who is a fan of Archuletta...
Kim, you're not alone-I don't get David A. either. Actually, if he were
genuine, I might love him. He's got a great voice, and is a cute kid.
To me though, it's too much of the "aw shucks act". He doesn't ring true so I rarely connect with his songs, although he
picks some great ones. I think we're in the minority though, judging
from all the fangirly screaming going on! Haha
I really like David A.
He seems very "young" and innocent and naive for someone who just turned 17. He certainly does not come across as a young stud who is wooing all the tween girls. We don't know what his home life is like, how sheltered he has been, or if he really is Mormon. All we know is that he can sing beautifully. I like the sound of his recorded voice very much and I hope he has a wonderful career. Heart

SH, I appreciate your POV about David A. And youre completely right about what we dont know about his upbringing. And yes, he can sing very well for a 17 yr old. I shouldnt be bashing him. I guess he's just my type--plus I cant stand Paula fawning over him or the screaming girls whenever he pops on stage. I dont think hes a stud...just a nice boy...

give me Taylor anytime...

Im sad when I watch AI cuz I remember Taylor....(sigh Sad)

American Idol Redux: David Archuleta & Taylor Hicks?
By Jim Roberts
Mar 31, 2008

Is American idol about to go down the same path it did when Taylor Hicks won in season five if David Archuleta captures the crown? Season five was the last decent competition for the show before the season six disaster of singers like Sanjaya Malakar and Blake Lewis. This season many believed that idol brought in 'ringers' to keep the show from falling even lower and it has worked as it has been a lot more fun to watch talented competitors.

But what happens if David Archuleta keeps getting worse each week and still wins the competition? There are many good singers this year that have better talent, but do they have the votes? From the guys side, David Cook has emerged as the best overall talent and Michael Johns has a good shot at the top five as well.

Two of the female contestants Brooke White and Carly Smithson will also be around, and at least one will make the top three. But with his rabid fans that vote early and often I can't see David Archuleta losing this thing. And that's where the Hicks comparison comes in, what happens then? The 17-year old surely has youth on his side but his singing style is a bit off for marketing.

Will it be a Taylor Hicks redux? Hicks won the competition easily two years ago, but when he got out in the real world of music his star faded fairly quickly. He had rabid fans that were certain he was the next "Elvis" and David Archuleta's fans are also certain he is the biggest rising star on tap. I didn't see it with Hicks and though youth may give David an edge, I'm not certain he is destined for top level stardom either. Is the Hicks comparison fair, we will see as David continues to sing, but he really needs to deliver a star performance soon. Personally, I dont agree that David is following Taylor's path--Taylor already HAD a path and David is still finding his. Besides, Carly is gone now; so much for his analysis.

What do you think?
Well, it took me a while to read that because of all his run-on sentences and crappy grammatical structure. I disagree as well. Archuleta is more likely to follow the path of Clay Aiken.

Although, really, it's the same path as any Idol that isn't Kelly or Carrie. None of the others have had the stratospheric success of Kelly and Carrie. But Kelly didn't hit her stride til her second and third albums, and Taylor hasn't even had a second (major) album yet, so people really are judging too soon. How quickly they forget how much "A Moment Like This" sucked.

Plus this guy is being really inconsistent. First he says season 5 and this season have tons of talent -- and then he pretty much flat-out says that talent doesn't sell records. (Besides the fact that we already knew that... who cares?)

If this contest was strictly about selling records, they wouldn't let the American people vote. It would be more like Top Model. They'd pick the person who sounded best on tape, not the best live performer, and Brooke wouldn't have to have a nervous breakdown every week. She'd have won it months ago.

So that's various thoughts from me as I'm still working on my first cup of coffee. Wink
