Our lead CD today is from a Portland band, recommended by both Amy and Alicia. I really enjoyed the Myspace tunes.
Rustic overtones
Light at the End
Thanks to Amy for the heads up, I totally spaced it. Rustic Overtones is a sweet band from Portland and they have just re-released one of their Cds.
I have seen these guys a lot and they rock! They played this summer for a free show in downtown Portland not far from Merrill where Taylor played. They filled the square and were just great. People came from all over to see them. I even called out sick that day. I’m happy for these guys and I think it’s great they are going to be touring the country. You can check them out and see where they’re playing.

To support the March re-release of their 2007 CD, Light at the End (now with bonus track!) Rustic Overtones will do a special in-store performance and signing at the Bull Moose in Windham Saturday, March 22nd at 4 PM. They will also be performing in Portland April 25 and 26 at the Asylum. If any one’s interested! (Alicia)
Daniel Lanois
Here It Is
From the Amazon blurb:
Here is What Is, the remarkable sixth solo album from Daniel Lanois, strikes a chord for independence as the first major release on his own Red Floor Records. An acclaimed singer/songwriter/producer known for producing some of the greatest albums of the last two decades (U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, The Neville Brothers, to name a few), Daniel Lanois has created an album full of viscerally powerful and beautiful new tracks that rank amongst his best.
The samples were low-key and languid, the sound of a hot New Orleans night. (Peggy)
Sara Bareilles
Little Voices -- New double CD edition
If you think that “I’m Gonna Write You a Love Song” is the best new pop song of the year, and if you want a pop songstress that’s just as hooky, but less fluffy and far more grown up than Colbie Callait, Sara Bareilles is it. I bought the CD a few weeks ago when Target was giving it away, and it’s wonderful. The new edition says it includes a Bonus CD with acoustic performances and video footage. (Peggy)
Dame Shirley Bassey
Get the Party Started
You always wanted to hear Pink’s “Get the Party Started” as performed by the diva who brought us Goldfinger 40 years ago, didn’t you? This disc celebrates the 70th birthday of Dame Shirley Bassey and combines 13 songs in a combination of new recordings and remixed and re-worked tracks by some of today's hottest producers. From “What Now My Love” to “I Will Survive”, Dame Shirley’s voice is full and rich and shows no age, but the arrangements could not be cheesier. (Peggy)
She and Him (M.Ward & Zooey Deschanel)
Volume One
I read about this band in the NYTimes blog on Austin TX’s South by Southwest festival (SXSW).. Ms. Deschanel is an actress, she has a sweet soprano voice that I expected to get tired of very fast, instead I found it growing on me. This is a collection of quiet ballads and easy pop, nothing raucous here, including a languid cover of the Beatles’ “I Should Have Known Better” that this week’s AI7 contestants should shamelessly borrow from. (Peggy)
