The Newport Folk Festival is the premier music event in New England and one of the most famous in the world. This is where Dylan went electric in 1965, a date Rolling Stone Magazine honors as one of the "50 Moments that Changed the History of Rock n Roll". Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company played in 1968.

The modern Newport Folk Festival, revived in 1985, takes place in one of the most spectacular settings for a concert anywhere, Fort Adams State Park at the southern tip of Newport, between Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. Of places I have personally watched music, only Colorado's Red Rocks Pavilion tops it.

I've been a couple times and it's just a perfect event. I've seen acts like Shawn Colvin, the Band, Mary Chaptin Carpenter and John Hiatt -- watched Ben AND Jerry step over my beach blanket.

The 2008 Festival dates and line-up have been announced, and the Festival is getting an upgrade..
The main dates are Saturday August 2 and 3.

The name that surprises me most is Jimmy Buffett, he who can fill Gillette stadium and its parking lot with Parrotheads. I did read this will be an unplugged set. This could be the prime ticket of the New England summer music season.

Under new management and with a young producer at the helm, the venerable Newport Folk Festival is stepping out of the past and into the rock 'n' roll mainstream. Gone are the jug bands, Cape Breton fiddlers, and bluegrass patriarch Ralph Stanley. This year's lineup features good-time tunesmith Jimmy Buffett, swaggering rockers The Black Crowes, and indie-soul chanteuse Cat Power.

"For me the theme was bridging the gap," says Jay Sweet, a 37-year-old editor at Paste, an indie-oriented music magazine. Sweet is coproducer of this year's event, which takes place Aug. 1-3 at Fort Adams State Park. "We're going to try to bring in more sizzle, in the artistic sense. We're creating a festival for musical omnivores."

In the bargain, they're creating New England's first real rock festival, which Sweet hopes will someday rival the genre-spanning sprawl of Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. "If we do it right and book it right, the kids will come," he says.

Grace was at the 2007 Newport Festival.. don't know if they schedule folks back-to-back. Was trying to find a website posting schedules from the more recent past, didn't find them.

I've noticed the Festival lineup to be ahead of the curve when it comes to New England acts. In addition to the acts you highlighted, I've been very interested in the buzz on Zooey's band. I've not seen Gillian Welch, she gets very good reviews, I like her songs better than her voice. I was ruined by seeing her in "O Brother Where Art Thou" competing with Alison K and Emmylou, she was out of her league.

My boss is a huge fan of the Avetts. And there are craft booths and stuff to do when you're bored with the music..
Brian Wilson has been added to the Newport lineup..

Quote:
The festival producers plan to announce Monday that Brian Wilson, a founding member of the Beach Boys, is joining the festival's lineup. He'll headline an evening performance on Aug. 1 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The festival continues Aug. 2-3 at Fort Adams State Park.

Wilson is the latest big-name act added to the festival, which already includes Jimmy Buffett, Trey Anastasio, the Black Crowes and reggae artists Stephen and Damian Marley.

The festival is under new management and has branched out beyond more traditional folk this year. Organizers are hoping their roster of popular performers can produce a sellout.

The festival marks its 50th anniversary next summer.

So the big question is... can I escape from Wedding Central in order to go... or do I just leave a message on Brian's message board, inviting him and the band to join me for breakfast closer to home the next day?
I say it depends on the wedding agenda for Friday night and how essential you are.
And why can't you do both?

Take it from a gray hair - GO !
Don't get to my age and have a list of regrets for the things you didn't do because of other people's ideas of what you "should" do.

Well, it's the week before the wedding, and it's not that far to go, so theoretically it shouldn't even be a problem. However, this is my family we're talking about here. Tricia and I are going to see Jeff Dunham three days after the wedding and people are having cows, bulls and other livestock over it.

I've seen Brian enough times already that he kinda recognizes me, I'll be seeing him at Hampton on July 13... but it's Newport. *sigh* Maybe I should invite Dad, I'm sure he'll want to escape the flowers and favors and crap, too. Hmmm... a plot begins...
