Blame it on Gravity
Olds 97

Olds 97 is one of those alt-country groups that certain acquaintances of mine drool over (in a musical way, like guys and sports, not THAT way), and when I hear their tunes I say, these guys are good who are they? But I don’t go so far as to actually buy their music. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. “Blame It On Gravity” is Olds 97’s seventh studio album and the first new album in 4 years. The sound is lively guitar-based acoustic/electric, there are some songs with an island vibe to celebrate summer, some Nothing morose or terribly complicated here. (Margaux)

Deluxe edition: the bonus DVD contains a 44 minute documentary on the history of the band including live performances featuring classics and new songs.

Hymn for my Soul
Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker has had one of the most brilliant careers as a “cover artist” in the rock era, credit being due to his trademark soulful spin on everything he sings. Hymn for My Soul is a collection of songs of spirit, including songs from Stevie Wonder (You Haven't Done Nothin'), Bob Dylan (Ring Them Bells), George Harrison (Beware Of Darkness), The Meters (Love Is For Me), Percy Mayfield (River's Invitation), At age 63, Joe hasn’t lost a thing. Tracks I thoroughly enjoyed: Solomon Burke’s “Don't Give Up On Me” is an awesome slow burning soul track, John Fogerty’s “As Long as I can See the Light”, simple and powerful, with voice, piano chords and guitar solo. and The Subdudes (One Word - Peace). Van Morrison’s Jukebox
Various Artists

This is billed as a collection of the artists that influenced Van Morrison. I’m quite skeptical that Van had anything to do with assembling this collection, I did find that the same label has put out “jukeboxes” for the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits and Led Zeppelin. In any case, if you want a classroom in the blues, jazz and early rock that influenced Van, this is an excellent start. Some of the tracks: Sittin' On The Top Of The World - Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Be-Bop-A-Lula - Gene Vincent, Ain't That Lovin' You Baby? - Jimmy Reed, Boogie Chillen - John Lee Hooker, and many more.
