Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a fourth judge. She will sit alongside Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the judges' table and use her background as an award-winning songwriter and producer to praise or critique the wannabe hopefuls throughout the competition. The eighth season of AMERICAN IDOL premieres January, 2009, on FOX.

I used to love the guest judges on the show too. This should make for an interesting season. What if there is a tie during the auditions (or maybe she won't be part of the audition rounds)?

I gotta wonder if the person most uneasy about this BIG news is Paula.
While it's billed as a move to increase the "girl power", I'll speculate here and say that the new judge is being "tried out" and if the TV audience likes her, Paula's days may be numbered.
There were enough moments in Season 7 that so easily could have been "jump the shark" moments, with Paulagate -- when she spoke about Jason's second performance when he'd only done one -- as the most blatant. What saved American Idol this year was the talent of the finalists.
Kara was a co-writer of Taylor's "Give Me Tonight". I'll have to see if she's ever performed.
According to the video on the AI site, I guess she started out as a singer.
