I'd be curious to have a show of hands on Sgt. Pepper:

If you weren't wild about Taylor's DAY IN THE LIFE performance, how old are you?
If you are under 45, do you consider yourself a Beatles fan?

If you thought it was magnificent, how old are you (it's ok to say over/under an age of your choice)?
Do you own Sgt.Pepper and in how many formats?

I have a theory....
And I loved it, liked how Taylor channeled a little Ray and Cocker in his performance, so you know where that puts me on the scale.
I did the unfortunate...I googled Taylor and read several articles, most putting down his performances last night (although a few were positive and one even said he was one of the best of the night). It was depressing me, so I came here to be uplifted. But I find you guys think he was bad also. I thought he did rather well., but then again, I am heavily biased. I thought he was lively, fun, sang well on both songs and was one of the best performers of the night. Am I crazy?
Watched both numbers about 6 times last night - - have now watched and Listened to them both 6 more times - and opinion remains the same - along with everyone I've talked to today - Taylor did a great job - - and am delighted to report a dual fan said that Taylor's performance kicked Chris's "eyelinered butt"  - LOL

and apparently his album started moving on Amazon even last night  and Heaven Knows is being added as airplay at a good rate  Grin

We are use to a concert version of Heaven Knows and agree it would have been nice if he would have had at least Loren on stage with him - - - but a friend who likes Taylor - but is not into following his career and has no experience with his live performances with the band - called right after HK to say she "loved, loved, loved" HK - thought he was great  - - I trust her judgement ! ! !
BTW she also thought his entrance was dramatic and "why would Ryan need to introduce him?  didn't you hear the crowd scream ?"    did I mention I love this gal ? ? ?

and maybe it's my age or general music preferences but in MHO A Day In the Life was simply outstanding  - - I honestly didn't appreciate what Taylor is really capable of with respect to interpretation until tonight with that song

I tend to get distracted by Taylor's facial expressions and always go back and just listen - - his A Day in the Life was simply wonderful - - the song demands tempo control and precise phrasing to make it work - - Taylor nailed it !

with thanks to meow for the mp3

my only problem with ADITL is that it has now joined I Shall Be Released on my list of songs I seriously need to hear a full version of   Sad  - - will settle for the AI amount as a tag though

btw check out the background of the song * * because it IS a perfect fit for someone like Taylor who appreciates musical history - - and if he was assigned to sing it they were either hoping he'd falter - -
or - it was a major compliment ? - ? - ?

Clive as the industry mogul is going to follow the $$$ - as a CEO that's his job - - but as pissed as I get at him - part of me still thinks the Clive Davis that once stood by a young Bruce Springsteen and made that call for Taylor last year does see what we see about Taylor - - marathon not a sprint, , ,Arista = career artists vs RCA = pop, , ,the number of songs in keeping with Taylor's style that Did make it on to the album even though it would be a hard sell to the pop market AI choses to target - - - maybe the second album will offer more insight - - -

or maybe I'm just a hopeless Pollyanna Roll Eyes

* * easiest read is on wiki - - here's part and the link will take you to a lot more about the evolution of this song.

"A Day in the Life" is a song composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and recorded by The Beatles for their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 (see 1967 in music). The song is actually a merging of two different, but complementary, song fragments originally authored independently by Lennon and McCartney, with McCartney's fragment added to the middle of Lennon's. Featuring impressionistic lyrics, innovative production techniques and a complex arrangement including a cacophonous, partially-improvised orchestral crescendo, the song is considered to be one of the most ambitious, influential, and groundbreaking works in music history.

OK. So now I feel a little better. I also thought Taylor nailed the Beatles song. It is a difficult song to sing, and I thought he did it very well. The best I've ever heard, other than the original of course. I'd love to hear him do some Beatles in concert!
Well, Margaux knows where I stand on the A Day in the Life performance.  I had never heard the song before in my life.  I loved it.  But I am also in the "the man could sing anything" category and I would love it.  Honestly.

I'm soon to be 34.  I am a Beatles fan but would definitely not call myself a fanatic.  A casual fan.  Never have listened to the Sgt Pepper album in its entirety.
GUYS... Just a head's up... whatever Taylor's performance was like (I have mixed feelings about it) his CD is at #2 TODAY on Movers & Shakers at Amazon.com up 1,530%.

so somebody dug it.
Corky, those numbers are simply amazing!!!!

I agree with Margaux and Hippie...I am under 45 and a Beatles fan since age 5 Grinyes, age 5...I knew all the words to Can't Buy Me Love and Eight Days A Week etc.
I thought Taylor did a super job on A Day In The Life...I love him to pieces but I think I can be objective if he sings something poorly or his performance is average... I simply don't comment on it. He hit all the difficult notes well and put a bit of himself into it which was soooo cool. I have watched it 4 times on TIVO.
I would give Taylor a "B" on Heaven Knows last night. Wished the band was with him but soooo happy he put some harp on it. I was staring at the TV thinking how handsome he looked in the black jeans, boots and killer jacket! I am a fan of the very short hair! Wink
Aging Hippie.. thank you so so so much for the mp3 link on Day in the Life. Listening without the pleasant distraction of the visuals tells it all.

That vocal was more spot-on than the entire season 6. He was assigned this song because he was the only one who could come close to pulling it off. The musical staff respects Taylor and knows what he can do. He got the hard one.

I just went over to Amazon to remind myself what the other Sgt. Pepper songs were, and there wasn't a better choice -- "When I'm 64"? Not with the gray hair, I don't think so!
With a Little Help? 1) he'd be tempted to do the Cocker version.. 2) they had to give it to the top 12, it's a group song. She's Leaving Home: Did anyone else think that Carrie was never going to finish?

DebD: Taylor doing Beatles in concert? Anytime. I have two words -- "Red Guitar".

Heaven Knows: He was a little lost without his band in the middle. But the harp and the moves were great.

Great news.
Taylor is now #19 on Amazon and Sgt. Pepper is #22!

Corky - - that's a tremendous jump even from the last post I saw from griz - - hmmm, I rarely do this but Whooooooooooooo

OK - have been thinking about this for a long time and guess it's just my day to be a long winded pain-in-the-butt

Please understand this is a general - and for me a long overdue - rant - - not directed at anyone - I promise - I love the NESP family and brag about you every chance I get ! ! - even if I have to manufacture an opportunity Grin - - but a post was a catalyst for something I think needs to be brought up - - yet again - -  maybe more as information for any "drop-ins" who may be new to the seeminly inevitable after-angst of a Taylor appearance than any other reason

this also is not about stifling legitimate constructive criticism - nope, even Mother Hen doesn't think Taylor walks on water - - -

for example I agree with Segerhicks - -  for me personally HK was about a B or B+
but think the AI backup singers contributed big time to the one weak spot and since people who had nothing to compare it against have been telling me they thought he was great - I'm going to grade on the curve and give him an A -  Smile

now back to my rant - -
I guess you might say this is about dealing with negativity by taking a deep breath, slowly exhaling, and realizing that Taylor is a very talented, very smart young man who will find his way through all the crap anyone lays down in his path just like he always has - - and that he has a lot of support in the right places - - - - like us for one stellar example Highfive

OK  here we go and thanks for playing  "AH dumps a major load of frustration"   Sad

One - -
this always drove me crazy on GC every time Taylor was on TV - - and from everything I've seen / heard around the web  - Taylor's fans are prettty much the only ones who do this and we are sometimes ridiculed for it - - we tend to hold him to an impossible standard of perfection in just about everything he does - - impossible because each one of us has an "ideal " performance, hairstyle [ dear gawd folks there were gel wars Tongue ], clothing style, interview response, etc.  in our heads and there is no way he can be all things to all people - -

what always confused the bejeebers out of me was that after a "cooling off period" most people realized that the appearance had been just fine - WTH ???

Two - -
why would any of us expect the same pop-tastic entertainment news writers who have disliked Taylor from day one to suddenly fall all over him ? ? ? ?
anyone who appreciates the style of music Taylor excels at will "get" the performances and they are the only ones who really matter in the marathon of Taylor's career

we stress out over opinions of some writers who don't like him or anything he stands for musically - - -
yet we seem to forget about - -

>  the true music critics with actual credentials who had very nice things to say about Taylor and his CD when it hit - - especially his own songs with Soul Thing in particular getting excellent reviews -

>  and things like Taylor being invited to sit in with musicians who garner tremendous respect among serious music lovers - including  the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam and pre-jam in Asheville last December when he was in a blues "harp off" with freaking John Popper ! !   or having the likes of Keb'Mo' sit in with him for his encore song Sweet Home Chicago at the Chicago HOB concert - then moving with Keb' to Buddy Guy's club and having Shemekia Copeland join him on stage ! !   and we can add Willie Nelson - Willie had Bo come up on stage and be introduced but Taylor actually sang in 2 [or was it 3 ?] numbers,  blues harp with Snoop Dog and it worked ! !,  Allman Bros, Marty Stuart , Gov't Mule, , , , , , ,

Shutting up now with these last thoughts for the "next time" - - -

for my money  I'll take having Taylor be a welcomed guest on stage with the likes of Widespread Panic and Robert Randolph if I feel the need for validation of his talents as a musician over any attempt to evaluate him based on asinine comparisons of cross genre "numbers"

and I'll take some honest comments from say one NPR interview over a dozen snarks by a bunch of pop culture hacks who rarely do more than quote each other  and are usually too lazy to do even a little web surfing before they interview or review anyone  - -

amazingly those who prepare and put in some effort to learn about Taylor almost invariably end up liking him
so perhaps, since Taylor does not provide them with the easy story lines of say a Brittany,  it is a case of casting pearls before swine - or in this case some modified Bard before hacks - - The fault, dear Taylor, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings - - - -  - - -  disillusioned journalism majors with little power over their lives and therefore resent the hell out of someone who is willing to stand tall and fight for what they value and believe in
[this is a pet theory and there is more to it for another time ]

- - - geeze if Gray was around he'd be handing me that dead horse picture about now - - - -  Shy
