I'm not sure what has changed for me in the past year, a physical difference in my hearing, a new twist in my musical taste, maybe I'm just coming in contact with voices that are "right" for me - - but whatever the cause the result is I am listening to, and truly enjoying, many more women artists than I ever have - even back before I dropped off the musical planet for a time.
The fact is I have always been somewhat resistant to female voices - if a connection was made it was only after spending a lot of time "working at" appreciating their music. So it still surprises me now when I like someone on first exposure to her work.
Samantha Crain is one of those artists.
Heather of I Am Fuel, You Are Friends intoduced her readers to this 21 yr old Shawnee, Oklahoma native with a style and voice she described as " introspective storytelling" and "gorgeously husky and unvarnished. "
These songs are taken from a site called Hear Ya that features live sessions with indie bands including artist approved free downloads - there are more songs available on the site.
Traipsing Through The Aisles (live) - Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers
Rising Sun (live) - Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers
This one is my favorite from Samantha's EP - - The Confiscation - A Musical Novella By Samantha Crain * *
For a little more information here is an excerpt from Samantha's page on her label - Ramseur Records.
" Hailing from the state that birthed both The Flaming Lips and Woody Guthrie, Samantha Crain writes with both the brazen conviction of the latter and the unflinching creative ambition of the former. Hers is a folk tradition indebted to Radiohead as much as Bob Dylan. Her shadowy arrangements and razor-sharp lyrics blur whatever superficial lines of genre or aesthetic may seem to separate these influences. It seems whatever the ingredients, she has a place for them in her inexplicable artistic recipe. Her sound is deeply rural and southern, but also itinerant and urban. Like Jack Kerouac before her, Crain is lost on the subway, sleeping in boxcars, leaving lovers behind, and dining in small town obscurity all within a few short days. "
* * The 5 track album is available as a download, or traditional CD, on Amazon
I used the NESP Amazon link that shows on the left side of the forums to purchase my download of the album - - Margaux, feel free to add the Amazon doodad if you wish.
