Quote:
American Idol runner up and Broadway actor Clay Aiken announced he is gay on the cover of People Magazine. Aiken, 29, recently became a father to a baby boy with friend and record producer Jaymes Foster, who he met while performing on the show that launched his career. His son Parker Foster Aiken was born in August.

"I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things," he's quoted as saying on the cover.

And this was a surprise to . . . ?

Seriously, I do respect him deciding to make a public confirmation.
I think he would have continued to stay quiet, if not for this:

I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things," he's quoted as saying on the cover.

But, I still stand by my opinion that no one should ever have to "come out." Heterosexuals are not expected at some point in their lives to proclaim, "hey everyone I'm hetero."

soapbox

Getting off now.
Maybe there were hundreds (or dozens?) of Claymates who were in deep denial and now that it's on the cover of People magazine, they will stop dreaming about Clay in "that way".
Ewwww.
I've never thought Clay was attractive "in that way", but not because of the fact that he is gay. Lance Bass on the other hand...never really found him attractive until I watched him dance last night. I'm not sure where my thoughts were going but there they are...Haha

And Tricia, I agree with you. I'm not sure why that public statement needs to be made. It's his own private life and he can tell his child the truth. No one else needed to know. It's the voyeuristic times we live in, I guess.
Tricia... I absolutely agree with your opinion - usually - but I also think that when it becomes a media issue for a celebrity and they try to hide as he certainly did - it sends young people an unfortunate message that there is something "wrong" and they need to hide too.
As ridiculous as it may be - it's just one of many things that still doesn't get a level playing field in our society. Hell, we haven't even managed equal pay for equal work yet shifty
AH, I do agree with you that he needed to say something because it's been made an issue. It has to stop being an issue, but we are a long way from that. Sad

And yes Amy, it is a voyeuristic society. We are kinda evidence of that right here on this board. Roll Eyes
Actually, I think that everyone should have to declare their sexuality, once they figure it out. When you hit 11 or 12 or whatever and the hormones start, decide who you think is hot and tell everyone! Wink It could be part of sweet 16 or quincenera parties, but we'd have to have them for boys, too. (The gay boys would be SO all over that!)

As for Clay and what rabid Claymates remain... well, it never turned the women off Liberace, Rock Hudson, Elton John, or, um... Lance Bass. Or George Michael. I'm sure someone else who isn't completely exhausted could think of more.

You just want a damn party! Haha

I can't help it if I like parties. Especially ones where I get presents. Grin
