This is the song David Cook has to beat. Nickelback's new single "Gotta Be Somebody" is totally accessible anthem rock, like dumbed-down Bon Jovi. Paint-by-the-numbers rock, the affirming lyrics that don't mean a thing, the noisy arrangement with the quiet middle verse, and the hooky melody you can sing to by the time the third chorus comes around. Kroeger's voice makes me want to turn the dial and take refuge in . David Cook's "Light On" may be formula, but it's still the far better song, sung by the guy with the voice that does convince you to leave the light on.
OK let me see if I can make any sense here.....Never have liked Nickelback, why because of what Margaux said I really don't like the voice and back ground noise. Last nite I stumbled across an AC/DC concert and I like a lot of their songs and never really listened to them or bought anything by them my point is the lead singers voice is somewhat like Nickelbacks distinctive is the word but yet I really enjoy AC/DC lead guitar player wicked talented and their all over beat,riffs,lyrics,etc..... is so much better.Just me I guess, did I make any sense?
I am not completely offended by Nickelback usually. Cas actually likes them. But this song, which I heard the other day, really bothers me. It's way too . . . busy. That's the only word I can think of.
Have been sneaking into my email to get caught up on the Lefsetz newsletters and seems he has something to say about the new Nickleback offering . . . .
Note: . . . as always with Mr. Lefsetz - be aware that there is "adult" language in his writings
ETA. . . LISA - you might be interested in the fact that the person who produced this Nickleback album - Robert John "Mutt" Lange - also produced AC/DC's biggest albums including their major work " Back in Black "

What do you think?
I can't STAND this song, the arrangement is so noisy that it's way to hard to concentrate on his voice and it just annoys me. I can't even listen to the whole thing. I do like that song "Photograph" by Nickelback though.
DC convinces you to leave the light on, huh? Let me just say I would light up my house with one of those huge mega spotlights if I knew DC was coming.

You've got to be kidding,I did not know that at all...........wow sometimes I really scare myself gee very interesting no wonder I felt something connect but couldn't put my finger on it.
I've never followed AC/DC that closely, and I think I know what Lisa means about the singer's voice, it's too grating for my taste, but I do know they get respect for their musicianship.
I've never heard anyone praise the instrumental work in Nickelback. For me, it's hooky radio-friendly rock that's not very interesting. The songs I can think of repeat the hooks over and over.
Then, of course, there is "Mutt" Lange's connection (or, perhaps, lack there of) with Ms. Shania Twain...
AC/DC is one of my guilty pleasure bands. I have a Live CD set of theirs that I pull out and listen to every so often. Back in Black, Thunderstruck, Hells Bells...brings back good memories.
Now, back on topic: Nickelback's song "Someday" is one of those songs that repeats itself over and over again. I never really thought about it until one weekend I was on a little roadtrip to Boston and my brother-in-law's brother commented on the song playing on the radio. It was "Someday" and he said listen...you can repeat the line "Just like a paperback novel" about anywhere in the song. So now, whenever I hear the song (and am not compelled or am unable to change the station) that one line sticks in my head like glue.
