LMAO!!!!!!!

I have not said anything as we had no diagnosis, but Bill has been very sick. We came home from being away 3 days at Easter to find him sick... and evidence all over the house. Ick. Anyway, after a geriatric profile and many tests (ouch for him, ouch for us !! - $$$$) we find he has a thyroid problem and will need meds for the rest of his life (he is approx. 10 yrs. old. Was a stray we adopted at age 4ish). We did get the local pharmacy to do up some oily fish meds and he will eat it, thank God. Otherwise it would be meds rubbed in the ear, we could do it but not anyone taking care of the pets while we are away.

My question. Does anyone have experience with this issue? I know it is pretty common. We have some trips planned and I sure do not want to stress him by boarding him so we will have neighbors come in to feed him and hopefully get in the two doses per day required. It will be tricky to keep Rachel away while he (slowly) eats his food... but we are determined to give this a good try, while keeping our plans too. Any hints, suggestions or just plain encouragement will be appreciated !
Awwww, poor Bill ermm It is good he'll eat what he's supposed to,
because giving cats meds is not easy! Hope he'll be okay!! Huggy

How to give a cat a pill Haha

1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As the cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and vigorously rub cat's throat.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make a note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill is not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of your last tetanus jab. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve the friggin' cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13) Tie the little @#!*#^~!'s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table, find heavy duty Pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

DOG: Wrap pill in bacon, cheese or peanut butter. Make him beg.
Our cat Snookie has hyperthyroidism and takes a pill 2x a day. We buy him pill pockets from the vet's office. They are treats that come with a hole inside to insert the pill into. Then you just squish it back together. Snookie loves taking these treats( and thus his pill) 2x a day!! Check with your vet about these! And the neighbors should have no trouble with these either. Smile
Liz - LOL hilarious and TRUE

Caryn, we seem OK with the oily meds in Fancy Feast but I will keep the treats in mind. The one issue is that he has a huge nose.. and for some reason it takes forever for him to to eat anything. So I think he might pick the treat apart in his nibbling. We do love him but he is a very strange animal. His "voice" is as loud as a human voice and he makes some really odd noises and talks A LOT .. if I am on the phone people ask "who is that?" ... unless they know Bill and then they just say "tell Bill Hello from me".
Duff,

Check with your vet re: sitters. Often they know of very competant people that will come & check on your pets while you are away. We feel it's bestif they stay at home; they have each other in familiar surroundings. Seeing the suitcase is traumatic enough for them.

Our vets office has the most wonderful vet tech girl that has been taking care of our babies for years now. We're very comfortable with her as she knows exactly what to do if anything goes wrong. Last year when we were away she noticed Emmie was truly not well, and rushed her to the vet, where she later passed. We later learned she was in her late teens and passed from the bad food. Many of you may remember that; we were in FL seeing some concert w00tbounce while all this happened. Regardless, the reason we have Cornelia is because she is so good with the girls & spends time & plays with them.
I am so very sorry about Emmie Grimsby. That is so sad, but I am glad you had someone so compassionate to be with her.

I spoke with my neighbor today. She is a cat lover and has 3 cats now. We often watch their cats and she said they'd be more than happy to come over. We are lucky to have great friends and neighbors so I think we will get by OK - for short trips, anyway !
Thank you! I'm glad I was able to give her a safe place with loving people & a nice buddy, Hobie, to spend her last three years. She was definately my cat; always came to me, slept with me, sat on my lap....etc.

Our new baby, Sassy, is also my cat. She's 1 1/2 year old black tiger & so full of energy. My little buddy, gets along good with Hobie, and is very considerate of her now that she isn't feeling well.

Great your neighbors are there for you!
Duff, I am so glad that your neighbor is going to help!
Okay, I had to find this thread and dust it off because I had to put one of my cats down today. crying He was a grey Himilayan named Stormy. He was 18 years old and I had gotten him when I was 19. He was already past the average lifespan for his breed so I have been preparing myself for awhile now. He had been alot less mobile the past few weeks and last night he was struggling to walk a few feet. He looked like he was in pain so I knew it was time. I thought I was fine until I told the kids and my 9 & 7 year old lost it so of course I lost it. My 4 year old and 11 month old had no idea why everyone was crying so they cried too. Haha

We are burying him tonight in the backyard. I already planted a tree there and put up a birdfeeder. I think I will pick up some perennials too. I have a 20 yr old Himilayan and an 18 yr old Himilayan so that will be the cat memorial area of our yard. Sad

R.I.P. Stormy
