High speed internet would be wonderful...for now I'll just take the dialup and do what I can. I do have a local library with wireless so if something absolutely dire comes up that requires a high speed connection, I can pick it up and run over there. There are a couple of local coffee shops with wireless also. Things are definitely looking up!

And Linda - it came preloaded with Rhapsody!
Neat !
Glad you're not computer deprived anymore - - you'll be glad to know that despite the Bethel motel's 50's decor it is a bit more modern in their conveniences - - they have internet access
RE: Rhapsody
This is a user friendly music source for almost every artist I've ever wanted to find with very few exceptions. It is also good for research since can search by Keyword, Artist, Track , Album, Composer, Video, and Lyrics. Although I still tend to use letssingit.com a lot to track down songs and artists with just a bit of the lyrics. You can also find artists related by genre if you want to and also access other people's shared playlists which can be fun.
Rhapsody sometimes offer deals for their packages which give you unlimited listening, allow you to set up personalized playlists that you can save and even edit, two download options and I think some other things that I haven't even explored. Think the package I bought worked out to between $9 - 10 per month.
I found the site but my son is the one who subscribed first and uses all the bells and whistles - - I primarily use it for listening - setting up playlists - sampling new artists and taking a "refresher course" on a name that pops up and interests me at the moment but whose CD I may not feel a need to own forever - - for example a renewed interest in ZZ Top has had me wandering through the 24 albums available on Rhapsody. Still appreciate their sound but are still only about 5 songs I really like enough to stash on a playlist.
You can try out the search and listening features for free.
You will have to install their listening program but if I remember correctly they walk you through it and is very quick.
Rhapsody allows each IP address 25 free listens to complete songs every 30 days. After that you can listen to samples of the songs that run approx 30 sec.
I did that for quite a while until 25 songs just wasn't enough anymore. For me Rhapsody is rather like having a fairly complete music store to wander around in - - I do a lot of listening but still go to FYE and buy the CDs I want to own.
this is a link for information - the FAQ link should cover most questions
http://learn.rhapsody.com/
if you just want to dive right in to some free listening then - -

and might I suggest trying it out with Ms Shemekia Copeland
http://www.rhapsody.com/shemekiacopeland
the 5 that appear on her home page are good with Beat Up Guitar having a slight edge for me
but do check out her newest album too The Soul Truth too - Used and Who Stole My Radio in particular
Used is a duet on the CD but she did it solo in her concert and it was wonderful
Something weird that happened to me this morning...
I went to disconnect from my dialup connection and my computer kindly told me it was detecting a low wireless signal. Maybe THATS why my dialup seems to have been so speedy. Would they work in conjunction with one another? I have an elementary school about 1/8 of a mile up the street...maybe it's picking up a connection from them? Whatever it is, I like it!

It sounds like it's a new computer with built in wireless and it may
be picking it up from the school or a neighbor.

It may be
set up to automatically search for the best signal. Check in your
connections menu and see what it says...
Believe me, I will investigate it...

I am not sure if both dial up and wireless could work together, but you can get on another person's wireless connection for sure.
Funny story. During the planning for a big Taylor event, one of our CT SPers (not sure if she is a member here) was desparate to keep in touch with the group and keep up to date on travel plans, etc. She and her family went to the shore on vacation. She would get up early, while the family slept, buy a coffee and drive around until she got a wireless signal. She'd park on the street and post away on the AI Boards. I still chuckle when I think of those zany things we did. Hmmm.. on second thought, I guess we are still doing zany stuff!
It sounds like something I would do...we're crazy for Taylor. No doubt!
I was sort of excited by the wireless connection. I may have to take my computer outside this evening and see if I get an even better connection. Woohoo!
Duff is right that the wireless wouldn't enhance your dial-up
but like she also said it is easy to snag a wireless signal and as long as you can get a signal reading of low strength or above you should be good to do just about anything
if it is the school you're picking up you should be able to find out who they are going through - maybe there is a new provider that could get you off dial-up - - or wonder if they are using a satellite feed ? - - that seems a little pricey for most school systems but maybe there is a deal for educational organizations - - will keep fingers crossed you find out it's a new provider for your area though
and good luck with your outdoor test
