I attended a very intimate concert last night. The performer is an acquaintance of my boyfriend named Scott Kirby. He’s around my age, a New Hampshire native who splits his time between here and Key West. He had been living in Key West full time until a few years ago when he decided he needed to come back and get his pension vested from his old employer. The setting was an upscale condo function room overlooking the harbor (and the Seabrook nuke plant) at Hampton Beach, about six blocks from the Happy Clam, what I would call a house concert. The $10 admission sponsored the hostess’ breast cancer walk. We got an invite from a mutual friend of his and ours.
Scott’s a singer/songwriter, his covers were James Taylor, Jesse Winchester (points to anyone but me who remembers him) and as you would expect, Jimmy Buffett, and his sound is definitely in the JT/Buffett neighborhood. Many of his songs are about a life near the ocean whether it be the Maine/New Hampshire resorts in winter after the tourists gone, or a bar in Key West that feels like church. His songwriting collaborators include noted LA session drummer Russ Kunkel (!) and Coral Reefer Peter Mayer. He told us he’s getting regular airplay on Radio Margaritaville, available on Sirius satellite and streaming internet:

There were two guys who drove up from somewhere in Massachusetts because they heard about the show on Radio Margaritaville. They were ecstatic when Scott sang a deep-from-the-vault Buffett song “Twelve Volt Man” (lovely song!)
Scott played fine acoustic guitar, accompanied by electric guitar and vocal harmonies by Dave Edmisten of North Carolina, who added masterful finger-picking and slide with a country touch. The surprise of the night was when Scott stepped back and let Dave take vocal solos – after a long instrumental, we were gifted with a very heartfelt and soulful “People Get Ready, there’s a train a coming”, which I certainly did not expect. Another surprise was a rocked out version of James Taylor’s “Country Roads” which doesn’t sound like it would work, but it did.
The night got me thinking about house concerts (but first we need a house),
how an acoustic tour is much better when it’s not a solo act (which I will discuss elsewhere on the board)
how new-age niche programming like Sirius/streaming internet gets people to buy records and go to concerts
and that you can be a working musician, over 40, without selling out, but you might have to keep your day job
Then I got home and read his myspace blog, and learned that his CD cover was painted by the friend we went to the concert with! And she didn’t say a thing about it.

with envy of being able to get to places like HB without it being an over night trip - will just have to live vicariously through your reports - especially after winter sets in - LOL
Great music! I always like being turned on to new music/ musicians!
