In her article today she reminisces about the Homecoming visits of Ruben, Bo and Taylor, and gives a nice plug to Harmony for the Soul:
"That's a weekend convention for Hicks fans, who've formed a nonprofit organization linked to the National Soul Patrol. They'll assemble here today and Saturday, raising money for Kid One Transport, one of the Gray-Haired Guy's favorite charities. Another beneficiary: the Alabama-Georgia chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
A slew of events has been planned for Hicks' faithful, including a dinner, a music festival at Sloss Furnaces, an auction and a pub crawl.
Bear in mind: Mr. Soul Patrol isn't scheduled to make an appearance at the confab. However, his Birmingham band, the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, will headline the Sloss fest. That's the next best thing for fans, who'll also hear acts such as Spoonful James and Clay Connor.

Here's one from my friend David, who I've mentioned here before. He is the source of much of the humor that makes its way into my inbox.

******

A man goes to an oral surgeon to have a tooth pulled. The dentist pulls out a freezing needle to give the man a shot.

"No way!! No needles!! I hate needles, the patient said".

The dentist starts to hook up a laughing gas and the man objects.

"I can't do the gas thing. The thought of having the gas mask on is suffocating me!!"

The dentist then asks the patient if he has any objection to taking a pill.

"No objection', says the patient, 'I'm fine with pills".

The dentist then returns and says, "here's a Viagra tablet".

The patient says, wow! I didn't know Viagra worked as a pain killer!

"It doesn't", said the Dentist, "but it will give you something to hold on to when I pull your tooth!!"

This week’s releases include new records by one of American Idol’s biggest stars, and two iconic singer/songwriters, and a kid record by Barenaked Ladies :haha: (thanks Mari!)

Which raises the question -- why do hit record producers these days go to the same trendy songwriters, over and over, and ignore the living geniuses? Neil Diamond got his start writing for the Monkees, certainly he doesn’t need the money, but he must have songs in the vault that would work for young pop and country stars, and join his catalog of enduring classics. Elvis Costello is a brilliant melody maker, who can be starkly beautiful or just as angry as ever, still the boundary breaking post-punk genius.
When a young singer like Clay Aiken sings classics of the 70s or 80s, it’s dismissed as “just a cover”, and the new music is forgettable. Maybe the answer is to get the “old guys” who still have the stuff to write new classics for guys like Clay.

Home Before Dark
Neil Diamond

There are a few musicians with iconic voices, they cannot be mistaken for anyone else, they cannot be imitated, they transcend genre and generation, the voices convey character and conviction. Think Sinatra, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson. The gravelly baritone of Neil Diamond is surely on that list.

“Home Before Dark” is the second Diamond/Rubin collaboration. Three years ago, Neil released “12 Songs” produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, who did the masterpiece recordings of Johnny Cash in his late years. Some fans of Neil’s adult contemporary classics were taken aback by the sparse unornamented arrangements. To my mind, when you have quality songs and Neil’s enduring voice, 1001 strings or synthesizers don’t add a thing. Neil’s voice shows its age, but has lost none of its richness. If you thought that somewhere in the 80s, Neil wandered too far down the path of saccharine lyrics and “easy listening”, these back to basic arrangements are welcome. Check out “Pretty Amazing Grace” and “Power of Two” and the bluesy ambling “Slow It Down”. I could skip the duet with Natalie Maines, her voice is too flat to harmonize with Neil. (Margaux)

Deluxe 2-CD edition with bonus tracks and videos (including The Boxer)

Momofuku[LIVE]
Elvis Costello and the Imposters

Don’t worry, the title isn’t obscene. According to Elvis, “Well, obviously the title is a tribute to Momofuku Ando, the inventor of the Cup Noodle. Like so many things in this world of wonders, all we had to do to make this record was add water.” The album was recorded in about a week.
“I'd been telling people that I was done with recording and believed it myself. This record date reminded me that it wasn't making music in the studio that made me miserable but the nonsense that predictably follows in what we laughingly call the "music business". So I decided to change it and my mind. That's what I do.”

The result is unpolished, unadulterated rock n roll as only Elvis can do. (Margaux)

On My Way Here
Clay Aiken

Fresh from his successful run on Broadway in “Spamalot”, the Season two runner-up Clay Aiken releases an album that is “finally” the one he has always wanted to make. So what is it? Middle-of-the-road pop that rocks just a little. The title track, written by One Republic (who did the recent hit “Apologize”) frontman Ryan Tedder called, "On My Way Here", has enough of the contemporary sheen to make it on adult contemporary radio, but could get old after about five listens. “Something About Her” is a pleasant piano ballad, suitable for a romantic dinner. Attempts to be edgy like the rocker “Fallen” with its vocal distortions are less successful. (Margaux)

Snack Time
Barenaked Ladies

The new Barenaked Ladies' kids' album, Snack Time, was released today. The video for "7,8,9" is awesome:

It's like old-school, Schoolhouse Rock kind of animation. The song is hilarious. I am actually contemplating buying the album even though I don't have any kids. (Mari)

For those of you that are local to Central MA...or wouldn't mind making a trip. I've spoken with a few of you about this, but nothing has really come out of it. There is a place in Worcester called the 80's Lounge (at least that's what I think it's called) that I've been dying to go to. However, most of my friends are out of state or just aren't interested in going. MaryBeth and Liz have expressed an interest in going. Who else would like to join us?

We were originally thinking May, but that's near to impossible for me now. Does the week before Father's Day work for anyone? Saturday night would be best. I believe that is June 14th. There are plenty of hotels in Worcester for those out of state that would like to join. Some nicer hotels are even located one town over in Auburn (by nicer I mean they were just built within the past 5 years and still look new).

Okay girls...it's been too long so don't let me down!

Friday, May 2, 2008

It's 5:30 P.M. Friday, May 2, 2008. Tori and I leave work to head for Louisville, Kentucky. We are staying at Days Inn, Louisville, Kentucky. We stopped off at Shelbyville, Kentucky to eat dinner at the Cattlesmen Roadhouse. After dinner we loaded back up and headed to Days Inn. We arrived there about 7:30 P.M. and unloaded the van to settle in for the night.

It's 5:30 A.M. on May 3, 2008. Up we get to head to Churchhill Downs. It's pouring, and I do mean pouring down rain. We dressed and loaded up the van and off we went to Churchhill Downs. A quick stop at drive through McDonalds and off we go. We arrived at Churchhill Downs at 7:15 A.M. and was very lucky to get a parking space at 6th Street. When we arrived only about 50 people were standing outside of Gate 17 going into Churchhill. We had our picture made by Fanfoto so we could order a picture of us just waiting to get in. The gate opened at exactly 8:00 A.M. and we entered Churchhill Downs. The whole race track was so clean and just waiting for all to enter. In about one hour all the waste started dropping onto the ground and it began to look like hundreds of thousands of fans were in attendance.

Tori and I head off to Gate 10 because a lady from Courier Journal called me Friday at work and told me that Taylor would be arriving over at the Red Carpet at Gate 10. We ran into Ted Gay, Vice President, Business Development and he instructed Tori and me how to get over to the Red Carpet. When we arrived there, we were instructed that we had to stay behind a twelve foot fence and couldn't go beyond it or we would be asked to leave. We did obey the rules! It sucked, but what could we do. By now it was around 11:00 A.M. and I needed to start placing our bets for the day which would free up our time to wait at the Red Carpet for Taylor to enter. We decided to have a little lunch and head back over to the Red Carpet. When we arrived back we ran into the owner of Monba and we talked with him and his friends for a bit. We weren't aware of who he was because people tell you all sorts of things just chatting but we did see him being interviewed later and realized he actually was Monba's owner. I should have had Tori take a picture of me with him but I just wasn't interested. I'm on Tay Watch!

Then around 3:00 P.M. the stars started coming in. As we waited patiently, I took out my sign "Soul Patrol, Brendon's Mom". Everyone starting asking about the sign. I told them we were part of Taylor Hicks' Soul Patrol and was there to try and get a couple of pictures of him on the Red Carpet. It was around 3:30 P.M. and a gentleman that saw the sign came over to Tori and me and said that Taylor would be arriving with the celebrity basketball players on the next tour bus and sure enough, up pulled the bus and they started unloading. Tori starting yelling, granny there is Taylor! She was right. He stepped off the bus to hear us yelling "Soul Patrol, Taylor Hicks". He waved at Tori and said "Hello". He quickly acknowledge that he saw us but had to wait there for a bit until he received his instructions. After about a minute, over he came to Tori and me at the fence. I told him "Taylor, I'll be in Birmingham next weekend" and his reply was "that is great". He said hello to Tori and then off they took him to the Red Carpet. Darn, it was just a matter or a minute or two. We did get a few pictures and I did snap a picture of him doing his "Whoooooo"! Then he disappeared inside of the tent. Off Tori and I ran to enter back into Churchhill Downs to greet him as he came through Gate 10. The waiting again was pure hell but finally I saw him appear with the basketball players. As I waited to smile and greet him again with Soul Patrol, my granddaughter snapped a picture of him coming through the gate. We actually tried to follow him to the Skylight elevators but the crowds was too tough to get through. I did manage to get a picture of him standing inside waiting for the elevator but it isn't the best picture. I did it, I actually go close enough in hundreds of thousand people to snap a few pictures of him. I'm ok now. I've had my small talk with Taylor and my Taylor Fix! I'm off now to watch the races.

I did bet Big Brown to win across the board and he did win. I collected $26.80 on a $2.00 bet. I hope Taylor took my advise and placed that Soul Patrol bet on Big Brown. We didn't see Taylor any more that afternoon. I was happy, hungry and very tired when the 11th race started. We settle down for a bit and waited for people to clear out and actually bet on the 11th race. Didn't win a thing and it was starting to get very cool for the evening so Tori and I left and headed home. That's all folks! Oh, by the way Monba finished dead last in the Kentucky Derby.

What pictures we did get, I'll have to post a little later today. Soul Patrol!

The Boss, Sinatra among N.J. Hall of Fame's first inductees

By DANIELA FLORES

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Pop quiz: What comes to mind when you think about Yogi Berra, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and Toni Morrison? Brilliant minds, inspiring souls, trailblazers - all are likely responses.

And ... New Jersey?

Yep. They all have strong ties to the oft-maligned Garden State, and they're among the first 15 people to be inducted Sunday into New Jersey's new Hall of Fame.

"I think anything you get inducted to you feel good about," said 82-year-old Berra, the famous New York Yankee catcher who lives in Montclair in northern New Jersey. "Heck to get inducted with all them guys, that's pretty good."

Berra, who's lived in New Jersey for 52 years, is in good company.

In addition to Edison, Einstein and Morrison, the inaugural class includes Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Meryl Streep, astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and Vince Lombardi.

"There's no doubt this will be a historic event for the state," said Don Jay Smith, the hall's executive director. "New Jersey is often the butt of jokes, nationally, and yet when people see who has claimed New Jersey as their home, they will be very impressed."

Edison's great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Sloane Eggemann, of White House Station in northwest New Jersey, said the famous inventor would be thrilled by the honor, and she hopes children are inspired by all of the hall's inductees.

"It's really great to recognize all the accomplishments," she said.

The Hall of Fame exists only as a virtual entity now, but officials are raising money to build a permanent museum. The first class was chosen through an online vote after 25 finalists were announced in 2006.

All inductees must have lived in the state for at least five years, though organizers made an exception to that rule for Underground Railroad pioneer Harriet Tubman.

Smith said he expects most of the living inductees to attend Sunday's induction ceremony at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

Two inductees, Streep and former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, have asked that the presentation of their awards be held until they can receive them in person.

"Meryl Streep was honored to be among the first class to be inducted to the New Jersey Hall of Fame," her representative, Michelle Benson, said in a statement. "Because of the significance of the Hall of Fame, she has asked that the presentation of her award be postponed until she can accept in person."

John Lombardi said his grandfather, a legendary coach who led the Green Bay Packers to seven NFL championships, would get a kick out of his induction into the state's hall of fame.

"I kind of look at the list of the 'who's who' who are getting inducted and I kind of laugh because I'm like, Edison, Einstein, then my grandfather," he said. "I think he'd be laughing out loud. He had a healthy ego but I don't think he ever thought he was up there with those guys."

A Collector's Tale

Just like many Taylor Hicks fans, I have a collection of “stuff” and I keep most of it in one place. I own many items purchased at Taylor’s 2007 shows including clothing, a keychain, and a magnet. I own several items purchased on eBay and even more unique items (cookbook & calendar) purchased to support an Alabama charity. There are other things with the Taylor Guitars logo and TaylorMade golf logo that would not be in my closet if I was not a Taylor Hicks fan.

In particular, I enjoy collecting photographs and have recently organized them all by date and/or event. I do not actually collect anything else. I never understood why some women collect dolls or angels or elephants until they own hundreds! The only items in my home that may be considered collections were either collected for me by my mother or handed down to me from my grandmother.

The one item that I have wanted and waited for is a used, signed harmonica. I had plans to one day obtain a Taylor Hicks harmonica and display it in a shadow box with two or three other small items. This would indeed complete my collection…it would be my most treasured piece. On the 2007 tour there were several signed harmonicas sold with COA to the fortunate early birds at the merchandise table in select cities. Even if I had the opportunity to buy one at a concert venue I would feel guilty for spending ~ $300 on a personal indulgence like this.

As a buyer and seller on eBay, I search for Taylor Hicks approximately once a week and not long ago I found a huge lot of items being sold for more than $500. This lot included a signed harp with COA from April ’07 in Kansas City. I was at one of those shows in KC and really wanted this harmonica but already own most of the other items included with it and could not spend that much. One week later I sold some old gold jewelry that I have not worn in 15 years and decided that if the opportunity presented itself again, I would use this “gold money” to buy a signed harp.

I found another one on eBay in late April. After asking the seller several questions to determine authenticity, I was convinced this was the real deal. The seller told me she won this harmonica in a contest she entered and sent me a copy of the e-mail from MusicToday.com! This was indeed one of the “five spit encrusted harmonicas “ many of you will remember. I was not going to be home or near internet connection at the end of the auction so I placed my highest bid of $106.76 for luck as these numbers represent Taylor’s birth date. When I got home that evening I discovered that I was the winner and ended up paying quite a bit less than my highest offer. Joy!

The day the harmonica arrived in the mail, I felt like doing a happy dance.
Why does this small instrument mean so much to someone like me anyway? Because the musician I admire so much made amazing music with it. It doesn’t matter that I don’t know when or where it was used…it is a genuine Hohner Special 20 with the little piece of tape on it and Taylor’s silver Sharpie signature!

Here’s my dilemma:
My five year old son (who plays a little harp himself and wants to be in Tay’s band when he grows up) asked if he could have it! I’m not sure what I’ll do…I hate saying no but I finally have my TH harmonica and want to keep it safe and unused by others. Now I selfishly want another one for my sweet boy. Good Lord, I must be nuts.

Joy!

Stories like this make me wish I was 22...
This guy is too good to be true, athletic, smart, talented..

Quote:Jim Moran remembers the last time David Cook was up to bat on his American Legion baseball team.

"There was an inside pitch, and he turned away, and it hit him in the back of the head," Moran recalled with a laugh. "Knocked him out right on home plate."

Moran also proudly tells everyone that Cook, a top four finalist for "American Idol," is also still in the record books for his team with the most games completed (by a pitcher) in one season. He recalls Cook only missed one week worth of games - to compete in the national forensics tournament.

"He's a well-rounded young man," Moran said.
